The Captain and the Rookie

The captain and the rookie.
This is how it began over 25 years ago. Then, it was backcountry skiing and mountain rescue and my early days in the fire service.

Dave was a captain with Gresham Fire when I was still testing, hoping to get hired as a firefighter. He encouraged me to go for it and was there to congratulate me when I made it.

Through the years he’s been a great friend, a mentor, and adventure pal. So it’s fitting that we’re here again. The captain teaching the rookie.

This time it’s woodworking.
Starting in the summer with a 2×4 of western red cedar and a season🍁 later having crafted a traditional Greenland kayak paddle.

In the beginning I laughed when measurements were in the 1/32”, when previously 1/4”-ish had been close enough. Now I get it.

In the beginning I had no idea that I would fall in love with hand tools that are 2 and 3 generations old; Or that I would find such calm and focus working with a draw knife and a block plane. I certainly never expected to have dreams about hand shaping wood or find myself up at 4am headed to the shop to work. Nor could I have imagined that as the paddle took shape that I would begin to feel connected to and in relation to this piece of wood.

Most precious to me was the time spent together in the shop with Dave. Me learning, he with his unwavering patience as he explained all the adjustments on the block plane for the 5th time. Just like the old days. This time we’re both older, hopefully a bit wiser, and most certainly recognizing and appreciating the moments of life that let us be in the company of good friends.

The river was glassy and calm this morning as I took the paddle for its first dip. As I pushed the paddle through the water I could feel its aliveness through my hands – slicing, pulling, flexing, rebounding, vibrating. So very alive.
I thought about how this piece of cedar, now a paddle, has brought us all into relation with the other – The water in relation to the paddle, the paddle in relation to me, me in relation to Dave.

This paddle and I are bound for some epic adventures together – and through it, Dave is, as well.

I’ve decided to name it Cara which is “Friend” in Irish.

Thanks for all the fun, Captain!
Now onward to the next adventure.
(Maybe boatbuilding??!!)
